OOC Consent and Cooperation

Definitions for "consent" in roleplay are as varied as there are MU*s. In order to dispel any confusion, we have provided an explanation below as to how "consent" works here at Nexus MUX:

  • A player may decide what type of RP they involve themselves in, who they play with and whether or not they get involved in TinyPlots (TPs).
  • A player may choose to FTB, work out the details OOCly with the others involved in the scene and then not actually RP the scene out.
  • A player has a right to be warned (using the +warn command or some other OOC method) if her character's current course of action, if continued, may lead to violence or other RP that they may not wish to engage in.

However, this does -not- mean that things should devolve into a childish game of "Cops & Robbers" where one player yells, "I shot you!" and the other one yells back, "No, you didn't!" If a player insists on ignoring a +warn from another player and her character gets shot, for example, her character should actually be shot. What -is- negotiable is where she is shot, how much damage she takes, and such — or, the details of the aftermath.

She does not have to RP the scene if it makes her uncomfortable, but she may FTB and OOCly come to an agreement with the other player(s) involved as to the outcome. (Though it is not played out, it still ICly happens and there will be IC ramifications afterward.)

The bottom line is that, for the most part, IC actions result in IC consequences but players should OOCly communicate with each other about their RP preferences and OOC comfort zones. It may also be advisable to make use of the +finger field &rp-prefs and to check for others' preferences before starting a scene. Pages, OOC talk and +warn can all be used to maintain OOC lines of communication and to keep everyone comfortable and OOCly happy.

Remember, though: at Nexus, if something isn't working, stop it and try something else. It's that simple. Every player has the right to -not- RP out something that makes them uncomfortable.
